Throttle bodies have been a long time coming but have finally made the circle. We now have throttle bodies that can be special ordered for the size needed for your application.

Note: Because the Crossfire intake is already smaller ( at 475 cfm) then the stock throttle (510 cfm per set) bodies, it will do no good to replace the throttle bodies with larger units on a Crossfire manifold.

Keep in mind that when you see throttle bodies advertises for say 2.055 throttle bores at 710 cfm they have not placed the throttle rod and plate in the throttle bore yet. The Rods and Plates reduce the cfm flow by 54.97cfm per throttle or 110 cfm per set. This was the main reason for the X-Ram throttle design. We have a main bore that will handle 950 cfm per set, and then reduce the inlet with Flow Restrictors to produce the exact flow through the throttles.

Throttles were originally built in only five sizes because of the complexity to build. But now P.P.S. has designed a new way to control the flow of the throttle port and allow extreme flexibility in CFM.

Please remember, the following sizes are only guidelines. If you have a stock engine and you are thinking of say a cam change in the near future or having a set of free flow exhaust installed then to save time you may what to step up to the next size throttle now instead of waiting. Although throttle flow reducers can be ordered at anytime and only require a few minutes to change.

As with the original oversize throttle design, we start with a set of stock TB400, 255 cfm Throttle Bodies (510 cfm per set). The Throttles are completely stripped down to bare castings and cleaned with 100 psi poly bead blasting to insure not to damage any surfaces. The throttles are then CNC bored to 2.374 inches and a 2.375 sleeve is frozen with liquid nitrogen and slid into place. After thermo expansion has completed, the new sleeves become as one part with the throttle body. At this point all similarities to the old design changes.

The throttles are then placed on their first CNC fixture plate where they are align bored with a special high speed “Drill/Reamer” that drills the main throttle shaft hole and then reams the hole to .378 in one step without changing tools or the position of the throttle body. This insures better alignments, size tolerances, movement surfaces and seal, then even the original throttle bodies could hold.

The second step in the process is to re-fixture the throttle body for CNC pre-boring. This is done with the use of a newly designed special high speed mill running at over 4000 rpm’s to insure a smooth pre finish and removes all but .007 of the finish bore in one step.

After completing the per-bore, the new Air Transfer Ports are machined out of the new throttle bore cylinder. All tolerances are held closer then the originals to insure better and smoother idle control and smoother air flow for computer-connected sensors.

The next step is to finish bore. This step required a balanced boring tool that finishes the final bore to a tolerance or -.000 to .001 of the finish size. This insures that all throttle butterfly plates will shutoff at the same position and allow for much easier final adjustments.

The final step is to re-fixture one last time and mill in the Velocity Reducer seat in to the top edge of the finished throttle bore.

This allows a air flow restriction ring “Velocity Reducer” to placed in the throttle bore for the cfm air flow needed for each individual customer while maintaining the manufacturing of just one throttle body.

Velocity Reducer Inserts will be manufactured in all standard cfm ratings of 672, 710, 720, 740, 750, 780, 790, 800, 810, 820, 830, 840, 850, 870 and 890 will only require removing the Velocity Reducer.

Higher flows from 900 up to 950 cfm are available through special order only. These units will not except the Velocity Reducer Inserts.
One set of throttle bodies will now fit all engines and applications from the 305 to 454 cdi small blocks.

Engine Requirements

Please note: Variable Velocity Throttle Bodies are specially designed to work with the X-Ram intake and will not work with Crossfire or any other intake.

The X-Ram Variable Velocity Throttle Bodies will only fit Series 3 and 4 X-Ram Top Plates or Series 1 and 2 Top plates that have been modified to receive the new throttle bodies by having the throttle ports bored out to 2.3”.

All X-Ram’s sold after 9-28-05 will ex cept the new Variable Velocity Throttle Bodies.
All X-Ram’s sold prior to that date must have a new top plate set or be modified.
After 2-15-06: Series 4 X-Rams have a completely new design that allows better positioning of the throttle bodies and better flow, all while creating a new top section that is narrower and allows full and easy access to the valve cover bolts.

Upgrading X-Ram’s to except Variable Velocity Throttle Bodies

P.P.S. will make available new top plate sets to all X-Ram owners for $180.00 + $100 core return charge that will be credited back to the purchaser upon the core return. Core returns must be received within 30 of receipt of the new top plate set.

Customers may send X-Ram top plates to P.P.S. in advance for exchange without a core charge.
At:

P.P.S., Inc.
18128 Keith Harrow Blvd. Suite E
Houston, TX 77084

Please call P.P.S. in advance to insure availability.

Only non-modified (no modifications of any kind) will be accepted as cores. Only top plate sets in original configuration will be creditable as a core.

Variable Velocity Throttle Bodies

Only the Variable Velocity Throttle Bodies with linkage and base gasket are sold as sets.
Injector towers and injectors, Idle Control Motors, fittings and gaskets must be interchanged form the original throttle body to the new Variable Velocity Throttle Body by the customer.

If throttle bodies are shipped to P.P.S. for exchange, P.P.S. will remove and remount the above parts on to the Variable Velocity Throttle Bodies at no extra charge to the customer.

The Variable Velocity Throttle Bodies and base gasket cost $550.00 per set with a core deposit or $250.00 prior to shipping. Core exchanges must be undamaged or non-modified stock throttle bodies with linkage. Core deposits will be credited back to the customer when the core exchanges are received. Cores must be received within 30 days of receipt of the Variable Velocity Throttle Bodies. After 30 days core charges will be used to locate and purchase stock replacements.

No core charges will be required if cores are shipped to P.P.S. as an exchange for Variable Velocity Throttle Bodies. Please call P.P.S. to insure availability prior to sending core exchanges in advance. Turn around time is only one day if Variable Velocity Throttle Bodies are in stock.

All prices are subject to change when tooling, material and labor costs increase.
